About Us ... Learn who we are.

Purpose of McNearys Ponds and Aquatic Plants.

This is a site where there will be information about outdoor watergardens and koi ponds. There will be information here about observations that encompass other things happening in the outdoors especially around the yard or garden setting. In our area which is the Piedmont section of North Carolina, we have insects that create problems for us, and these same insects may or may not be a problem where you are.  The same thing applies to invasive plants. What might be invasive here will not be a problem in your area. Our winter season usually shows a little snow and sometimes the ponds freeze over, so what happens here might not be the same for you.

We are interested in environmental issues so expect to see comments about them.

On this first page we will always start with Todays Topic. This will read backwards so if you want to see what happened several weeks ago, just scroll down to the appropriate date. One of the issues we follow closely is the Fall Cankerworm problem in Charlotte so we will post that daily during the fall and spring seasons. Go directly to Current Cankerworm information.

Blackjack - best dog ever

IMGP4600_edited-1

Blackjack showed up at my shop 14 1/2 years ago as a pup. Some of my men decided that we needed a watch dog. At first I was reluctant, but Dave told me he knew of a dog someone wanted to give away because it was too big for them.

I agreed for a trial period. After I was hooked on Blackjack, I was told the real story. Blackjack had been tied up to a table leg, and then when Blackjack got a little bigger he was tied to a hand rail outside while the owners were away at work. More Photos of Blackjack.

Today’s Topic

Usually by this time (March 2nd) we will have seen many signs of spring. February 8th I have seen yellow daffodils and I have predicted for 40 years that in February we would always have one week when it would seem like spring.

That has not been the case this year. Last week there were a few days when it warmed up to 60 degrees but it is still too cold to see spring like weather.

The maple buds are swelling, and I expect to see the weeping willows start to green up.
Selling a Truck with powerful 300 gallon Spray Rig
Left over from business days is a very serviceable spray truck. This truck runs with a Wisconsin VG4D air cooled engine. This is the work horse that runs so many large spray rigs and stump machines. We had the truck fuel tank and engine refurbished not long before we sold the business and the truck is a 1986 Chevy flat bed.

Contact me for a very reasonable price on this truck. jmcneary@(remove this)gmail.com. See the link below for more details and Photo of 1986 Chevy flat bed truck with spray rig and 300 gallon fiberglass tank... powered by Wisconsin VG4D air cooled engine.

We no longer have these koi but they were in our main pond. The two butterfly are Andy who is the male and Mistress who is the female. These two koi are the ones I bred from for almost ten years. They always produce some beautiful babies. Some of their young are still in the pond and have become really pretty. These and others were sold in the Spring of 2009.  If you want to use any of my photos, just contact me at
jmcneary(remove this)@gmail.com. We sold almost all of our koi and plants to Oakdale Greenhouses of Charlotte.
Also see a few more photos from our collection below. I have lots of pretty nice photos of koi and plan to take more as time allows.

Below
Yamabuki butterfly koi is about 22 inches long and I had him for years. The Sanke is one from Quality Koi, and I particularly like the lightning strike on the nose. When he arrived, I said I needed that one for my own pond.

Lightning is in this photo also, but a really fine fish is the Kujaku on the right. This is turning into a very fine specimen. In front of the koi is a willow oak leaf floating on the water. The leaf should be two or more inches long which will give you an idea how large these fish are.
